Between land and sea Between land and sea

Imagine basking in the Mediterranean sunshine, with the sea and its little private coves on one side, and the Albera mountain range on the other. Because mountains are as much an integral part of Argelès-sur-Mer as the sea!  This mountain range proudly overlooks both the beach and the town. With its valleys and 1000-metre summit, it offers a huge variety of landscapes. Not far from Château de Valmy are two dolmens, showing that these mountains were inhabited by man very early on in our history. Just follow the cycle or walking routes for a spectacular view of the Massif…

Argelès-sur-Mer - just a seaside resort? Not by any means! There are plenty of historic monuments too, most of which are listed buildings and open to the public, including Galerie Marianne, the castle in the Taxo d’Avall district and Valmy public park. Whether indoors or outdoors, from museums to ruined buildings, in Argelès the local natural heritage is all around: nature reserves, coastal paths, pine forests… all the beauty of nature, right on your doorstep!

Protecting local fauna Protecting local fauna

The “Vallée des Tortues” (Tortoise Valley) wildlife park, created by Françoise Malirach, is in Sorède, just a few kilometres from Argelès-sur-Mer. There you will find over 30 different species of tortoise - in fact there are around 500 of them altogether. Its owner was inspired to create the park by the 19th century discoveries of giant tortoise fossils and many other species of tortoise in Pyrénées-Orientales. The purpose of the park is to protect this endangered species, and help visitors learn about the animals’ way of life as they have fun in a place known locally as “La Vallée Heureuse”, or Happy Valley!
