Oisans is a region characterized by its high mountains, it is famous for its hawkers in the past, and, above all, for the Écrins National Park, France’s largest and highest national park, as well as its countless glaciers, springs, lakes, waterfalls and streams. Oisans is the land of eagles, chamois and ibexes, as well as the great mountaineers who set out from La Bérarde to conquer the legendary peaks, from La Meije to the Barre des Écrins. Oisans with its six valleys – the valleys of Romanche, Ferrand, Vénéon, Sarenne, Lignarre and the Vallée de l’Eau d’Olle – has some wild rivers, with typical mountain villages clinging to the steep mountain sides high above. In summer, all the hiking tracks from Bourg d’Oisans will take you out of town to enjoy its beautiful surroundings; with lots of fantastic nature on your doorstep! Cyclists are attracted by the ‘balcony roads’ to climb the high mountain passes or the famous 21 hairpin bends on the winding road to Alpe d’Huez which has been the scene of many a legendary stage of the Tour de France. And in winter, most villages and ski resorts, from the Massif des Grandes Rousses to the Écrins mountains, provide access to the breath-taking skiing areas of Alpe d’Huez and Les Deux Alpes… Welcome to Oisans !

In the legend of cycling, the name reverberates like a “household name”, a scene of suffering, a place which has earned a reputation for its courage and the heroic achievements of the greatest champions! Ever since 1952, the 21 famous hairpin bends of the winding road to Alpe d'Huez have truly become a “legend” through the Tour de France. When a stage is won in Oisans, enhanced by the fantastic media coverage of the world's greatest cycling competition, it becomes a true “epic”, with the winner just “shining his glory”! And the spectators know very well where to go: in 2003, a crowd of 800,000 were clinging to the hillsides all along that road to marvel together at the extraordinary beauty of the effort and the beauty of the landscape! Lovely “balcony roads”, legendary mountain passes, stunning landscapes… Oisans combines all the pleasures of cycling like all those “breakaways”, whether it is a simple tour with all your family or one of the great cycling competitions. Oisans, that's a bicycle on a “vast” plateau, a truly “magical” tour, with competitions throughout the summer, like the competition of Vaujany, the “Prix des Grandes Rousses”; the famous competition of La Marmotte, the ascent of Alpe on the winding road from Bourg d'Oisans to Alpe d'Huez on the wheels of the great champions… or even the “5000 D”, the ascent of the five resorts of the Massif des Grandes Rousses. Among all those itineraries there will, no doubt, be something for everyone (or maybe not?). The term “mountain-bike” truly makes sense in Oisans with its many mountain-bike itineraries, its large dedicated areas (Les Grandes Rousses, Les-Deux-Alpes etc.), its international competitions, such as La Mégavalanche in Alpe d'Huez or the “The Great Moutain-biking Tour round Oisans”. Cycling on the great itineraries between earth and sky… All the different types of mountain-bikes are perfectly suitable for the terrain of those competitions: whether cycling tours or cross-country (XC), free-riding (FR) and downhill (DH). Welcome to the largest and highest of the seven French National Parks! You will be welcomed by an explosion of colours and smells, and the breath of animals and the humming of insects will accompany you every step of the way in this vast territory which is bordered by Grenoble, Gap and Briançon and Bourg d'Oisans which forms the main gateway to the National Park. The Écrins National Park, which is also classified as a European high-mountain nature reserve, invites you to go beyond its natural boundaries to explore a land which has its very own distinctive character and “soul”… This National Park was created in 1973 to protect the environment, and with a long-term view towards ensuring the sustainable development and management of 270,000 hectares, 92,000 of which are classifed as a ‘protected area',12,000 ha of glaciers and 700 ha of complete reserve with major scientific issues to be dealt with. In these deep or suspended valleys, sixty-one hidden hamlets live the rhythm of life of this “bosky bower”, both in terms of landscape and in terms of its cultural heritage. Up there, on the sunny slopes, the ibex, which was reintroduced to this area from 1990 to 1995, grezes in the company of other typical animals of the Park, like the chamois, whose population has incrased from 3,000 in 1973 to 12,000 today, as well as marmots, ermines, martens, foxes and hares jump around in freedom… oh what an Ode to Nature! This is a land of wild landscapes surrounded by high mountainss. However, we should say that the Tour round Oisans on the GR54, always “flirting” with the boundaries of the National Park, is a great adventure: it should not be done without any knowledge of the area. In this ‘natural amphitheatre' with more than a hundred peaks over 3,000 meters high you can explore the length and breadth of the National Park on its 740 km of signposted footpaths which are accessible for all (whether families or experienced hikers) in order to admire its more than 1,800 plant species, 40 of which are rare or threatened from extinction. Whether, boreal or mediterranean plants, its flowers and plants which grow in extreme climatic conditions are a major issue for the Park, as are its 200 protected animal species, 110 of which are nesting birds. And just look at the majestic golden eagle and the shadows of his mighty wings when he glides over this high-mountain universe with its infinitely diverse and harmonious natural environments.
